Safro — The Journey

From Markets to Code

Our journey began in the dusty lanes of Sabon Gari market in Zaria. We arrived with a simple assumption: traders needed a faster payment app. We were wrong. By sitting on mats with tomato dealers and sharing tea with union leaders, we discovered that speed was not the problem. Fear was.

Traders like Malam Musa were rejecting large orders from distant buyers because they had been burned by fraud before. This “Trust Deficit” was freezing capital and keeping trade hyper-local.

The Pivot

Realizing that a smartphone-only app would exclude the majority of our users, we pivoted to a Dual-Interface Ecosystem. We stopped trying to modernise the market and instead built a bridge to it. We developed a USSD gateway for feature phones (Nokia 3310s) and a mobile app for digital natives, ensuring that everyone could participate in the trust economy.

Achievements & Reflections

Team Safro’s most profound achievement was not just the code, but the realization that technology must bend to culture, not the other way around.

  • Key Milestone: Successfully triggering a blockchain escrow contract via a basic USSD interaction in the Hausa language.
  • The Big Lesson: We built a bridge, translating complex blockchain trust into a language Zaria understood.
